Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist that blocks substances called leukotrienes to connect with their receptor. Leukotrienes cause narrowing and swelling of airways in the lungs and also cause allergy. By blocking leukotrienes, Montelucast improves asthma symptoms and helps control asthma, also Montelucast 10 mg improves seasonal allergy symptoms (also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis). Your doctor may prescribe Montelucast to treat asthma, preventing your asthma symptoms during the day and night.
- Montelucast is used for the treatment of patients who are not adequately controlled on their medication and need additional therapy.
- Montelucast (only the 5 mg tablet) may also be used as an alternative treatment to inhaled corticosteroids for 6 to14 year old patients who have not recently taken oral corticosteroids for their asthma and have shown that they are unable to use inhaled corticosteroids.
- Montelucast also helps prevent the narrowing of airways triggered by exercise.
In those adult patients in whom Montelucast is indicated in asthma, Montelucast can also provide symptomatic relief of seasonal allergic rhinitis.
